Comparing Things with Nouns

Estructura:

Noun phrase + verb + (not) + comparative + than + noun phrase

     La intensidad de corriente es mayor que la capacidad del cable en este circuito.

2. Cable protection is not safer than current control.
     La protección del cable no es más segura que el control de corriente.

     El flujo de corriente es más rápido que el tiempo de respuesta del enchufe.

Comparing Activities

This structure is used to compare actions or activities using gerunds. It shows whether one activity is more or less something than another.

Estructura:

Gerund phrase + verb + (not) + comparative + than + gerund phrase

Ejemplos:

1. Plugging devices is easier than replacing a fuse.
     Conectar dispositivos es más fácil que reemplazar un fusible.

2. Replacing a fuse is not more dangerous than flipping a switch.
     Reemplazar un fusible no es más peligroso que accionar un interruptor.

3. Flipping a switch is quicker than testing a resistor.
     Accionar un interruptor es más rápido que probar una resistencia.

Comparing Activities

This structure is used to ask whether someone performs an action better (or worse) with one thing than with another.

Estructura:

Verb + noun phrase + comparative + than + noun phrase?

Ejemplos:

1. Do we test the resistor more accurately than the outlet?
     ¿Probamos la resistencia con más precisión que el tomacorriente?

2. Do they install the outlet faster than the transformer?
     ¿Instalan el tomacorriente más rápido que el transformador?

3. Does she configure the transformer better than the voltage regulator?
     ¿Ella configura el transformador mejor que el regulador de voltaje?

Comparing How We Do Things

This structure is used to ask questions about how an action is performed using gerund phrases, comparing one way of doing something to another.

Estructura:

Verb + gerund phrase + comparative + than + gerund phrase?

Ejemplos:

1. Does he manage measuring voltage more carefully than adjusting amperage?
     ¿Él gestiona la medición de voltaje con más cuidado que el ajuste de la intensidad?

3. Does she explain inspecting cables more clearly than monitoring current?
     ¿Ella explica la inspección de cables con más claridad que el monitoreo de corriente?

Ejercicio:

Ayude al teacher a traducir al inglés las siguientes oraciones:

1. Cambiar el circuito es más seguro que tocar el fusible.

2. El cable soporta más carga que el enchufe.

3. Usamos la resistencia de manera más eficaz que el transformador.
