This topic explains how to use can, can’t, could, and couldn’t with the subjects you and they to express general truths—facts or common possibilities (or impossibilities) in everyday contexts.

You + can/can’t

Used to express general abilities or possibilities you have or don’t have in common situations.

Estructura:

You + can/can’t + base verb

Ejemplos:

1. You can use a blender to mix fruits quickly.
     Tú puedes usar una batidora para mezclar frutas rápidamente.

2. You can’t boil water in a saucepan if it's too small.
     Tú no puedes hervir agua en una cacerola si es demasiado pequeña.

3. You can strain pasta with a colander.
     Tú puedes colar pasta con un colador.

You + could/couldn’t

Used to talk about general abilities or possibilities you had or didn’t have in the past.

Estructura:

You + could/couldn’t + base verb

Ejemplos:

1. You could stir soup with a spoon.
     Tú podías revolver sopa con una cuchara.

2. You couldn’t cut meat without a knife.
     Tú no podías cortar carne sin un cuchillo.

3. You could flip pancakes with a spatula.

Use you for people in general

They + can/can’t

Used to express what other people can or can’t generally do.

Estructura:

They + can/can’t + base verb

Ejemplos:

1. They can cook rice in a pot.
     Ellos pueden cocinar arroz en una olla.

2. They can’t grate cheese without a grater.
     Ellos no pueden rallar queso sin un rallador.

3. They can fry eggs in a frying pan.
     Ellos pueden freír huevos en un sartén.

They + could/couldn’t

Used to express what other people could or couldn’t generally do in the past.

Estructura:

They + could/couldn’t + base verb

Ejemplos:

1. They could eat salad with a fork.
     Ellos podían comer ensalada con un tenedor.

2. They couldn’t blend ingredients without a blender.
     Ellos no podían licuar ingredientes sin una batidora.

3. They could heat milk in a saucepan.
     Ellos podían calentar leche en una cacerola.

Use they for people in authority such as bussines owners, people in government and people in charge of organizations.
