ORACIONES RELATIVAS RESTRICTIVAS Y NO RESTRICTIVAS: REVISIÓN Y AMPLIACIÓN. |
Relative clauses, both restrictive and non-restrictive, are essential for providing additional information in a sentence. In this topic, we will review the differences between them, how they are structured, and how they are used with examples from the context of nature.
Main clause with restrictive relative clause
A restrictive relative clause provides essential information that specifies or limits the meaning of the noun it refers to. Without this clause, the sentence would change or become incomplete. Restrictive clauses do not use commas.
Estructura:
|
Subject/ main clause + relative pronoun + relative clause |
Ejemplos:
1. It's similar to the tree that I planted last spring.
2. It's different from the stone that I found near the river.
3. The car (that) we bought yesterday has already started to fail.
"That" is used for restrictive relative clauses. You can´t use commas.
Main clause with non-restrictive relative clause
A non-restrictive relative clause adds additional information that is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. If it were removed, the sentence would still make sense. Non-restrictive clauses are separated by commas.
Estructura:
|
Subject/ main clause + relative pronoun + comma + relative clause |
Ejemplos:
1. The person whom I met at the park was very friendly.
2. The dog whose tail wagged happily was my neighbor's pet.
3. The book, which I borrowed from the library, was fascinating.
Non-restrictive relative clauses can´t begging with "that" but you can use commas.
