PASADO PERFECTO CONTINUO

The Past Perfect Continuous is used to talk about actions that started in the past and continued for a period of time before another past action. It is useful to provide context or to emphasize the duration of an activity.

Affirmative

Used to state that an action had been happening before another past action. It emphasizes the duration of the previous action.

Estructura:

Subject + had been + verb-ing + complement

Ejemplos:

1. The compressor had been working for hours before the technician arrived.
     El compresor había estado funcionando durante horas antes de que llegara el técnico.

2. The circuit had been failing intermittently before the upgrade.
     El circuito había estado fallando intermitentemente antes de la actualización.

3. The building had been shaking due to the malfunction.
     El edificio había estado temblando debido al mal funcionamiento.

Negative

Used to deny that an action was happening before a certain point in the past.

Estructura:

Subject + had not been + verb-ing + complement

Ejemplos:

1. The structure had not been resisting the vibrations well.
     La estructura no había estado resistiendo bien las vibraciones.

2. The machine had not been operating efficiently before the inspection.
     La máquina no había estado operando eficientemente antes de la inspección.

3. The motor had not been responding to the control signals.
     El motor no había estado respondiendo a las señales de control.

Yes/No Questions

Used to ask whether an action had been occurring before another past action. The auxiliary verb is placed at the beginning.

Estructura:

Had + subject + been + verb-ing + complement?

Ejemplos:

1. Had the panel been displaying errors before the system crashed?
     ¿Había estado mostrando el panel errores antes de que el sistema fallara?

2. Had the bridge been vibrating during the test?
     ¿Había estado vibrando el puente durante la prueba?

3. Had the sensor been sending inaccurate data?
     ¿Había estado enviando el sensor datos inexactos?

Information Questions

Used to get details about actions that had been occurring. They begin with a question word (what, where, why, etc.).

Estructura:

Wh-word + had + subject + been + verb-ing + complement?

Ejemplos:

1. Why had the turbine been making unusual noises?
     ¿Por qué había estado haciendo la turbina ruidos extraños?

2. How long had the compressor been overheating before it shut down?
     ¿Durante cuánto tiempo había estado sobrecalentándose el compresor antes de apagarse?

3. What had the circuit been affecting in the main system?
     ¿Qué había estado afectando el circuito en el sistema principal?
