NOT ONLY ... BUT ALSO

This structure is used to emphasize that two elements are equally important in a statement. It can combine nouns, prepositional phrases, or adjectives.

Noun + noun

Used to emphasize two things or people. Both nouns must be of the same type.

Estructura:

Not only + noun + but also + noun

Ejemplos:

1. Not only Athletics but also Baseball are important in school programs.
     No solo el atletismo sino también el béisbol son importantes en los programas escolares.

2. Not only Baseball but also Biology is part of the curriculum.
     No solo el béisbol sino también la biología forma parte del plan de estudios.

3. Not only Biology but also Happiness matters in education.
     No solo la biología sino también la felicidad importa en la educación.

Prepositional phrase + prepositional phrase

Used to emphasize two phrases that indicate location, time, or direction.

Estructura:

Not only + prepositional phrase + but also + prepositional phrase

Ejemplos:

1. Not only in Biology but also in Language, students must participate actively.
     No solo en biología sino también en lenguaje los estudiantes deben participar activamente.

2. Not only in Language but also in Justice, communication plays a key role.
     No solo en lenguaje sino también en justicia la comunicación cumple un papel clave.

3. Not only in Justice but also in Mathematics, clear rules are essential.
     No solo en justicia sino también en matemáticas las reglas claras son esenciales.

Adjective + adjective

Used to emphasize two equal qualities of a person or thing.

Estructura:

Not only + adjective + but also + adjective

Ejemplos:

1. The new game is not only Mathematical but also entertaining.
     El nuevo juego no solo es matemático sino también entretenido.

2. The lesson was not only clear but also Monopoly-related.
     La lección no solo fue clara sino también relacionada con el Monopoly.

3. The activity seemed not only fun but also Scrabble-based.
     La actividad parecía no solo divertida sino también basada en el Scrabble.

Ejercicio:

Ayude al teacher a traducir al inglés las siguientes oraciones:

1. No solo el tenis sino también el atletismo se practican en nuestra escuela.

2. La regla se aplica no solo en el atletismo sino también en el béisbol.

3. Este tema no solo es interesante sino también orientado a la biología.
