In English, when giving or reporting advice, we use verbs like say, tell, suggest, and recommend with different structures. Below, we explore these forms and how they are used in real contexts.

Say and tell followed by an infinitive

The verbs say and tell are used followed by an infinitive to report advice or instructions. With tell, an object (person) is needed, while say does not require one.

Estructura:

tell + object + to + verb/say + to + object + to + verb

Ejemplos:

1. The doctor told me to rest after the fracture.
     El médico me dijo que descansara después de la fractura.

2. She said to him to put ice on the contusion.
     Ella le dijo que pusiera hielo sobre la contusión.

3. They told her to keep pressure on the hematoma.
     Le dijeron que mantuviera presión sobre el hematoma.

Say and tell followed by a that clause

Say and tell can also be used with a subordinate clause introduced by that. Tell is used with an object, say is used without one.

Estructura:

tell + object + that + clause/say + that + clause

Ejemplos:

1. The nurse told me that the dislocation needed rest.
     La enfermera me dijo que la dislocación necesitaba reposo.

2. He said that the sprain would heal in a week.
     Él dijo que el esguince sanaría en una semana.

3. She told us that the wound was not serious.
     Ella nos dijo que la herida no era grave.

Suggest and recommend followed by a that clause

Suggest and recommend can be followed by a subordinate clause beginning with that. The verb in the clause appears in its base form (subjunctive).

Estructura:

suggest/recommend + that + subject + base verb

Ejemplos:

1. The doctor suggested that he cut back on movement after the cut.
     El médico sugirió que redujera el movimiento después del corte.

2. She recommended that we clean the laceration immediately.
     Ella recomendó que limpiáramos la laceración inmediatamente.

3. They suggested that I cover the abrasion with a bandage.
     Ellos sugirieron que cubriera la abrasión con una venda.

Suggest and recommend followed by a gerund

Suggest and recommend can also be followed by a gerund (-ing form).

Estructura:

suggest/recommend + verb-ing

Ejemplos:

1. He recommended applying cream to the burn.
     Él recomendó aplicar crema en la quemadura.

2. She suggested resting after the fracture.
     Ella sugirió descansar después de la fractura.

3. They recommended elevating the leg after the contusion.
     Ellos recomendaron elevar la pierna después de la contusión.
