TOPIC 1: As long as, providing (that), unless. |
In English, we often use conditional expressions to talk about situations and their possible outcomes. Three common expressions are “as long as”, “providing (that)”, and “unless.” These phrases help us set conditions for something to happen. “As long as” and “providing (that)” are used to say something will happen only if a certain condition is met, while “unless” introduces the only situation that would stop something from happening. Understanding these helps make your speech and writing more precise and natural.
1. As long as
We use "as long as" (siempre que) to show that one thing will happen only if another condition is met. It’s similar to saying “only if” or “provided that.” This phrase is useful when talking about rules, agreements, or requirements for something to take place.
Structure:
|
Subject + future verb/modal + verb + (complement) + as long as + present simple |
Examples:
1. We will accept the return as long as the item is in its original packaging.
Aceptaremos la devolución siempre que el artículo esté en su embalaje original.
2. You can get a full refund as long as the product is in new condition.
Puedes obtener un reembolso completo siempre que el producto esté en condiciones nuevas.
3. They will approve the return as long as it is made within thirty days.
Aprobarán la devolución siempre que se realice dentro de los treinta días.
Uses "as long as" to show the something will only be possible if something else happens or is done first.
2. Providing (that)
We use providing (that) (siempre que) to express a condition that must be true for something to happen. It means “only if” or “on the condition that.” This phrase is often used in formal or written English to set clear requirements or rules.
Structure:
|
Subject + future verb/modal + verb + (complement) + providing (that) + present simple |
Examples:
1. You can return the product providing that you have the original receipt.
Puedes devolver el producto siempre que tengas el recibo original.
2. The return will be processed providing that the packing slip is included.
La devolución será procesada siempre que se incluya la hoja de empaque.
3. We will give you a full refund providing that all conditions are met.
Te daremos un reembolso completo siempre que se cumplan todas las condiciones.
Uses "providing (that)" to show the something will only be possible if something else happens or is done first.
3. Unless
We use unless (a menos que) to introduce a negative condition that prevents something from happening. It means “except if” or “if not.” This word helps express exceptions clearly and is commonly used to show when an action will not take place.
Structure:
|
Subject + future verb/modal + verb + (complement) + unless + present simple |
Examples:
1. You won't receive store credit unless you follow the return policy.
No recibirás crédito en tienda a menos que sigas la política de devoluciones
2. We won't send a replacement unless the item is defective or damaged.
No enviaremos un reemplazo a menos que el artículo esté defectuoso o dañado
3. A restocking fee will be charged unless the return meets all criteria.
Se cobrará una tarifa de reposición a menos que la devolución cumpla con todos los criterios
A useful tip is that unless often replaces the phrase “if not” in negative conditional sentences, making statements shorter and more natural. For example, instead of saying “I won’t go if it doesn’t rain,” you can say “I won’t go unless it rains.” Remember, unless always introduces the condition that stops or prevents something from happening.
